The Department of Pharmaceutics is a place where commitment to
excellence in academia, research and development is demonstrated through the
productivity and success of our faculty and students. We continue to march
with times and our program focuses on expanding the scientific avenues for
improving the delivery of drugs and therapeutic agents. We offer a training
environment that includes the latest formulation laboratory instrumentation
and technologies supervised by experienced teachers and dedicated staff.
The laboratories are engaged with experiments and practicals related to
formulation and evaluation of dosage forms including tablets, capsules,
liquids like suspensions, emulsions, solutions, cosmetics, etc. for PhD,
M.Pharm, B.Pharm and D.Pharm subjects
The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is one of the core departments of School of Pharmacy, Techno India University, West Bengal, which focuses on research and teaching involving drug development and discovery. The Department is currently working with 7 faculty members, 2 staff members and diverse groups of research scholars. The Department is actively involved in providing a relevant knowledge base and technical skills to the students emphasizing the industrial research activities, the development methodology of eco-friendly synthesis and green chemistry.
The department has sophisticated instrument facilities as well as facilities for phyto-pharmaceutical research, bio-analytical and analytical research. Significant publications in reputed national and international journals further demonstrate the department's dedication to research endeavors.
The Department engages the students to gain the knowledge and expertise related to Pharmacology and Pharmacy practice including understanding action of drugs, practical application of Pharmacological principles, Experimental techniques required in pharmacological studies, Safety protocols to be followed, Documentation skills required, teamwork and communication skills, etc. Overall, the goal is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of pharmacological principles and practical skills necessary for future studies or careers in pharmacology and related fields.
With the help of various instruments like Rota Rod, Electro-convulsiometer, Analgesiometer, Histamine Chamber, and Actophotometer etc. students learn to examine the effects of different drug samples. Charts, models, including the human skeleton, and various types of apparatus are used to study human anatomy and physiology. Further, Animal House facility is also available in the department.
The Department deals with the studies related to Pharmacognosy which is specifically the study of morphological, chemical, and biological properties as well as history, cultivation, collection, extraction, isolation, bioassay, quality control, and preparation of crude drugs of natural origin. Some common apparatus used in Pharmacognosy Laboratory Include
1. Soxhlet Extractor: The Soxhlet extractor is used for liquid-solid extractions when the compound to be extracted has limited solubility in the chosen solvent and the impurities are insoluble
2. Rotary Evaporator: A rotary evaporator (also called as ‘rotavap’ or ‘rotovap’) is a device used in labs for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples by evaporation.
3. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) plate: This is a flat glass or plastic plate coated with a thin layer of stationary phase, such as silica gel or alumina. It is used to separate and identify different compounds present in a sample.
4. Column chromatography column: This apparatus is used to separate natural products using a stationary phase, such as silica gel or alumina. It consists of a glass column packed with the stationary phase, and a sample loading port at the top.
