Research in Mechanical Engineering

Recently, the development of electroless coating of metal-ion, alloy, and composite coatings on various metal/non-metal surfaces has witnessed enormous interest among researchers due to corrosion and abrasive wear resistance and excellent mechanical, physical, electrical properties. Further to enhance the corrosion resistance, studies have been carried out by depositing duplex composite coatings using micro/nano reinforcement have shown promising properties compare to electroless alloy coating.
Duplex deposits provided a moderate increase in micro-hardness, approximately 100% in regard to the substrate and it offered excellent corrosion resistance, with the most amorphous ones having the least corrosion rates because of the exclusion of diffusion paths amongst grain boundaries. The high phosphorus containing inner layer offers excessive corrosion resistance at the same time as the composite outer layer revealed superb mechanical properties. All duplex coatings exhibited an excellent corrosion resistance in salt fog spray tests. The system possessed great anticorrosion and mechanical properties.

The objectives and motivation of this research are as following:
1. To investigate different duplex complex nano coating (Al2O3/SiO2) with Ni-P on Al-Cu-Mg-Mn Alloy ,MS and other substrate. Characterization (SEM, EDS, XRD, TEM) mechanical behavior (wear test, hardness test), and corrosion test (OCP test)
2. Optimization of the plating process parameters (Reducing Agent, Source of Metal and Bath Temperature) using computational mathematical method.

Work Done so far
1. Duplex coating has been successfully done on Al-Cu-Mg-Mn Alloy (Highly used in aerospace industry) and other substrates.
2. SEM , EDAX test has been performed at Central Research Facility at IIEST Shibpur.
3. Other tests like corrosion, Nano Indentation and Nano scratch test needs to be done.
4. Published 5 Papers at various eminent International conferences.
